Philomena, based on the 2009 investigative book by BBC correspondent Martin Sixsmith, The Lost Child of Philomena Lee, depicts the efforts of a mother (Judi Dench) to find the son she was forced to give up. Pregnant out of wedlock—something her Irish-Catholic community frowned on—she was coerced into relinquishing her parental rights, signing a contract that forbade any inquiry into her son's whereabouts. After starting a family years later in England and, for the most part, moving on with her life, Lee meets Sixsmith (Coogan), a BBC reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son. The answers that she finds will resonate deeply with all PFLAG members–LGBT persons, their parents, friends and allies. The film won the Venice International Film festival for best screen play and was the People's Choice Runner Up award at the Toronto film festival.
