PARENTS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS ALLIED WITH THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
First Fliers: In 1974 Jeanne Manford visited Adele and Larry Starr encouraging them to start regular meetings for parents of LGBTQ persons. We don't know how Jeanne and Adele knew about each other, but the connection was powerful. Adele and Larry had already started going to "open conversations" at the Gay Community Service Center (which would become the Los Angeles LGBT Center), where they had met other parents of LGBTQ persons concerned about their children's well being. In early 1975, Adele and Larry, with the help of Charlotte Spitzer and others, produced these fliers to advertise a new meeting with the specific goal of serving parents and families of LGBTQ persons. Note the handwritten annotations on the second flier referring to local radio stations that might broadcast this public service announcements. No one came.
