PARENTS, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS ALLIED WITH THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
Anti-gay rhetoric heats up: Almost immediately the newly organized Parents and Friends of Gays had bitter public battles to fight. In 1977, Anita Bryant lead a scathing and defamatory campaign to repeal a gay rights ordinance in Dade county Florida. Targeting gays as a threat to families, children and "traditional American family values", her campaign succeeded. That success emboldened California state legislator John Briggs to launch an initiative making it illegal for LGBTQ persons or their supporters to serve in California public schools as a "teacher, teacher's aide, administrator or counselor." This photo is a bumper sticker passed out by the chapter as part of their efforts—including canvassing—to help defeat the Briggs Initiative. It failed with 58% of voters in opposition. Sadly, Briggs had a gay son, who wrote an editorial in the Los Angeles Times opposing his father's bill.
Would I have had the courage to take this step?
What can I do now to move equality forward?
